Those responsible for human rights violations in Belarus and the use of force against protesters after the presidential elections should be subject to personal sanctions, said Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius.

“The sanctions that we are discussing on a regional, European scale must be individual, directed against those who are responsible for the violation of human rights and the use of excessive force,” he said on the air of the national radio LRT.

The minister stressed that the leadership of Belarus should first of all release the detained protesters and “eliminate the atmosphere of intimidation.”

“The detainees – often random people who pass by – should be released. Here we are dealing with the arbitrariness of power structures, ”added the head of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry.

Earlier, he announced a new appeal by Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the presidential candidate in Belarus in the August 9 elections.
