Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, an opposition candidate for the presidential elections in Belarus, who has arrived in Lithuania, is feeling well and will soon comment on the situation. I wrote about this in my Twitter 12 August Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius.

“I spoke with Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. She is in a good mood and will perform soon, ”he said.

Formerly Linkevičius wrotethat he spoke to CNN international correspondent Christian Amanpour about Tikhanovskaya. The journalist stressed that the democratic world “is morally obliged to respond to repressions against people in Belarus.”

On August 9, presidential elections were held in Belarus. According to the latest data from the Central Election Commission, the current head of state, Alexander Lukashenko, won 80.08% of the vote, Tikhanovskaya – 10.09%. The opposition’s headquarters did not recognize the results of the vote.

After the announcement of the preliminary election results, unauthorized protests began in Minsk and other cities of Belarus, which resumed on August 10 and 11. Both civilians and security officials suffered. In addition, there were detentions of journalists, including Russian ones.

On August 11, a video message from Tikhanovskaya was published, in which she confirmed her departure from Belarus. After that, she recorded another video message in which she urged supporters not to participate in the protests and not to confront the police.

On the same day, the head of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry announced that Tihanovskaya was safe in Vilnius. He said that before that she was detained in Belarus “and she spent about seven hours in detention.” The Belarusian Border Committee confirmed that Tikhanovskaya crossed the border with Lithuania at night, noting that she had travel documents and no action was taken against her.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said that he does not believe that the appeal, recorded by Tikhanovskaya, was recorded of her own free will.

The European Union called the elections held in Belarus not free and not fair, and also threatened to impose sanctions against those responsible for police violence.
